Driving in Spain
Taking your own car to Spain? Spain has a couple of rules that catch UK drivers out. You need a UK sticker even if your number plate already shows UK, and you can keep using a triangle instead of the new V-16 beacon.
Checked on 17 October 2026 against GOV.UK and the RAC and AA guides. Rules change, so check the official sources at the bottom before you travel.
What you must have
- UK sticker on the rear, even if your number plate already shows UK
- Warning triangle (UK cars can keep using a triangle; the V-16 beacon is compulsory only for Spanish-registered cars from 1 Jan 2026)
- Reflective (hi-vis) jacket, worn if you leave the car on the road or hard shoulder
- Headlamp beam deflectors or adjusted headlamps
- Spare wheel and tools, or a puncture repair kit
- Fire extinguisher if you're towing a caravan or trailer
Worth packing
- A hi-vis jacket for every passenger (AA)
- First aid kit (recommended, not mandatory: AA)
Documents
- Your full UK driving licence (photocard). If you still have a paper licence, GOV.UK says you may need to update it to a photocard or get an international driving permit.
- Your V5C logbook. If the car is hired or leased in the UK, you need a VE103 certificate instead.
- Your motor insurance certificate. Check with your insurer that you're covered abroad.
- Your passport.
- UK sticker: you must show one in Spain whatever your number plate shows (GOV.UK).
Clean-air zones and stickers
Madrid, Barcelona and many other towns have low-emission zones. Spanish eco-stickers (DGT) aren't issued to UK cars, and each city runs its own process. Barcelona's zone covers the city and several neighbouring towns, and foreign cars must register with the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona before they enter (AA, GOV.UK).
Official sites:
Tolls and vignettes
Most motorways are free; some are tolled. Pay by cash or card; Via T is the electronic option (RAC, AA).
Winter rules
No national winter tyre law. In mountains or snow, carrying snow chains (or snow socks) is recommended, and police can stop you driving if conditions are too dangerous (AA). Studded tyres banned (AA).
Speed limits (cars)
| Road | Limit |
|---|---|
| Motorways and dual carriageways | 120 km/h |
| Other roads outside towns | 90 km/h |
| Towns: roads with 2+ lanes each way | 50 km/h |
| Towns: one lane each way | 30 km/h |
| Residential zones | 20 km/h |
Signs always take priority over these general limits.
Drink-driving limit
The limit is 0.5 g/l of blood (0.05%), and 0.3 g/l for drivers in their first two years (AA). Police regularly run roadside checks (GOV.UK). The limit in England, Wales and Northern Ireland is 0.8 g/l.
Fines to know about
- Speeding €100–€600 (AA)
- Not wearing a seat belt €200 (RAC)
- On-the-spot fines halved if paid within 20 days (GOV.UK)
Shop the kit
- Car emergency kit, 7 pieces, £17.99: warning triangle, hi-vis vest, jump leads, tow rope, safety hammer, gloves and a bag.
- Warning triangle, foldable and reflective, £9.99.
- Hi-vis vest, £6.99 each: one for everyone in the car, kept inside the cabin.
- Car first aid kit in hard-shell case, £16.99.
We don't currently stock UK stickers, headlamp beam deflectors, spare bulb kits or breathalysers. Ferry ports, Eurotunnel and most motoring shops sell them, so pick them up before you cross. Remember Spain needs the UK sticker even if your plate shows UK.

FAQs
Do I need a V-16 beacon in Spain with a UK car?
No. The V-16 beacon became compulsory for Spanish-registered cars from 1 January 2026. UK-registered cars can keep carrying and using a warning triangle.
Do I need a UK sticker if my plate already says UK?
Yes. Spain is one of the countries where GOV.UK says you must show a UK sticker whatever is on your number plate.
Is a hi-vis vest compulsory in Spain?
You must wear one if you get out of the car on the road or hard shoulder after a breakdown or accident, so keep one in the car for each person.
Do I need a spare wheel?
Yes. The AA says you must carry a spare wheel with the tools to change it, or a puncture repair kit.
Can I drive into Barcelona or Madrid?
Both have low-emission zones. Spanish eco-stickers aren't issued to UK cars, so check each city's own rules. Barcelona asks foreign cars to register in advance.
