Motorbike MOT checklist
A motorbike MOT checklist helps owners prepare their motorcycle for the annual test by focusing on brakes, lights, tyres, steering and suspension.
What the MOT checks on your motorbike
The test follows the official inspection manual and covers items listed on the VT29M checklist. Riders sit on the machine for some checks while others require the wheels raised. The process examines the machine from front to rear and both sides, including a brake efficiency test and headlamp aim check with the rider seated. Inspectors record the MOT test number, registration mark and vehicle identification number before starting. They note the date of first use and any defects or comments during the inspection.
Brakes and controls
Inspectors check handlebars, brake controls, throttle, clutch lever and headbearings. They perform a bump test on front and rear suspension and test brake efficiency for bind, grab or judder. Controls must operate smoothly without excessive play or stiffness. The horn is also tested during this stage to ensure it produces a clear sound. Brake tests measure efficiency on front, rear and sidecar where fitted, along with any bind or judder issues.
Lights and reflectors
Front and rear position lamps, headlamps, indicators, stop lamp and reflector must work. Headlamp aim is checked with the rider seated on the machine. All lamps need to be secure, correctly aligned and free from damage or discolouration that could affect visibility. Position lamps, indicators and the registration plate lamp are examined from the rear of the machine as well.
Tyres, wheels and suspension
Tyres are examined for tread depth and condition. Wheels and bearings are tested for play. Rear suspension and final drive are checked along with wheel alignment. The front wheel is raised to inspect steering, headbearings and front suspension movement. The rear wheel is raised separately to check the rear wheel, bearings, suspension, tyre and brake. Wheel alignment is verified to ensure safe handling.
Steering, frame and exhaust
The frame, seat, foot rests and fuel system are inspected. Exhaust condition and steering damper if fitted are assessed. Horn operation is also verified. Sidecar attachments are examined if a sidecar is present, including wheel alignment and weight distribution checks. The frame and foot rests on both sides of the machine receive close attention for security and condition.
